First day riding below freezing. I need a car...

Yep.

It’s been forever since I’ve been on o ppo, I see you sold the Miata. So you’ve just been dailying a motorcycle since then?

Something something real men blah blah

You know what always starts right up, even at 20 degrees?
Seriously though you might just need a battery.

Time for another Volvo wagon!

Just get an electric blanket and drape it over the bike for the night. Some older carbed vehicles hate starting when it’s cold. Also get a car.

Believe it or not, I'm looking at a mid 2000's Prius this week

Battery is a new motobatt unit, should be good. I think I have an electrical issue of some kind though. I know the regulator/rectifier is a troublespot with these bikes

Yep! Minus a brief few months of scooter mayhem. At this point a reliable boring commuter is sounding pretty nice though.

That's hard core man. I'm sure you don't want to hear that I took mine out last night wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

Hey man nothing wrong with a boring car that works and keeps you out of the cold.
Are gonna buy an old Corolla or something and use it as a winter beater?

And the Prius is one of the most reliable and durable vehicles out there.

Ugh. I wish temperatures allowed me to squid it up for a quick ride

I don't know how you deal with *real* cold. 30° is tough

They make heated seats/grips/gear etc.
They also make cars with heated seats and grips (steering wheels) where you’re less likely to become a statistic in the rain.
My view this weekend, you should ride here!

You get used to it, but it does suck. It is for sure the reason why I can afford to own a reasonably sized reasonably nice home, and provide for a family of four, solely on the salary of a middle school shop teacher.
As for riding, 40° is the go/no-go line for me. That's where the juice is no longer worth the squeeze.

Lol. Perhaps a convertible?

And buy “these” bikes you mean every Honda made since the 1960s.

Some bikes really don’t take to the cold with the smaller
starter and battery combinations.
M
y friend had a
GSX-R 600 and she said it refused to start below 45F. Be very careful in those
freezing
temperatures,
the first 10min are
dicey,
especially the first few corners and your tires aren’t
warm (and won’t ever get to good
temp)
. Both Peter and I dumped
our bikes last winter dickering about in cold temps. I won’t ride below 45F because of the tires and there’s
usually de-ice/salt on the road.

In my younger days, I would ride year round, as long as there wasn’t any snow or ice on the road. There have been times I got stuck riding in a snow sq uall or or encountered treacherous ice at higher elevation . These days, my motorcycle stays in the gara ge during the winter. Old a ge and wisdom, not treachery.

I think 40F is about where I want my cutoff. Anything below that and it takes too much work to be comfortable, even for short commutes.
Good call in the mornings. I was moving slow to account for potential ice, but I didn't really give much thought to my tires likely being rock hard

How’s your commute?
I bet the larger cities on that side of the state would be good places to pick up real estate in the next few years....

I did not know that. One of these days I’m going to be stranded because I was to cheap to buy a new a new unit and keep it taped under the seat for emergencies
![]() 10/26/2020 at 23:04 |

Ha! This past week I’ve determined that 40F is also my preferred limit. That’s where I don’t have to spend twenty minutes planning a cold weather outfit, or worry about ice on every corner...
That seems like a more than reasonable tradeoff. I really need to work on marketable skills that can get me out of Seattle someday

WFH, I’ve gone in once, to get my computer. Haven’t driven since last Wednesday. Still plenty of snow on the ground here, getting winter tires next week.
That ship has set sail, YOY price increases in some areas here are likely the same as Puget Sound - but of course the starting price is much lower. It seems anything decent in Spokane under 250K is pending in a day or two, but that you can get something livable for less than that is remarkable in itself.

Yeah, the ice is a real issue below 40° too. I almost slipped on some ice last night.
It is a worthwhile trade off, IMO. The only real problem for car guys, is you either have to put them away 5-months a year, or watch them rust.
